Before he shaped the vision of JRR Tolkien's mind to the big screen with hobbits, elves, and orcs, Peter Jackson showed us the power of the lawnmower in the zombie apocalypse. Released in New Zealand as "Braindead", Dead Alive stands today as a Mount Rushmore zombie movie. Campy, silly, and extraordinarily un-scary for a horror movie, Dead Alive makes zombies look familiar and totally original all at once with their poor motor sills and ravenous appetites. For fans of the zombie sub-genre it doesn't get much better than the comedically gratuitous violence in Dead Alive. While the lawnmower scene steals the show, all the old fashioned FX and makeup cement this classic as a must-see for horror fans. Don't miss the chance to go there, and back again with Dead Alive!
If you trust this film, it will be good to you. While saying that may not instill confidence, we're pretty sure it won't be long before you're sucked in. The acting and dialogue between Hank and his friends will have you laughing, and the strategizing Hank does with the "visitor" to his home will keep you glued to the screen. Told through flashbacks and at times dreamlike sequences, After Midnight is a truly indie gem of a horror movie. The hardest part of reviewing it is not giving anything away, but suffice it to say, this movie will have you convinced it's going to end one way or another, until it absolutely surprises you with its conclusion. It's a laughter-inducing, intrigue-creating, head-scratching, "date night" horror movie..and you can wait until after midnight to watch it, if you dare...
